6x9 Poly Mailers

A 6x9 mailer is the size you reach for when the order is one small thing and a thank-you card. It is the size that stops a pair of earrings, a lipstick or a phone case rattling around inside a bag built for a sweatshirt, and it is the size that keeps the parcel inside the flat-rate bands that most small parcels are priced against.

It is also the size most often bought by mistake. Sellers who ship a mix of small items and folded apparel tend to order 6x9 first because it looks like a sensible starting point, then find that anything thicker than a folded t-shirt will not close cleanly. This page sets out what the size genuinely handles so you order the right proportion of it.

What this size actually holds

Fit depends on how thick an item is once packed, not on its flat outline. These are the categories customers most often run through 6x9.

  • Jewelry and small accessories

Boxed earrings, chains, hair clips and pins, usually with a card and a small tissue wrap.

  • Beauty singles and samples

A lipstick, a serum bottle in a sleeve, a sheet-mask multipack, or a sample set going out as a marketing send.

  • Phone and tech accessories

Cases, cables, screen protectors and small charging blocks.

  • Flat paper goods

Print orders, sticker packs, enamel-pin cards and greetings ranges that need to arrive uncreased.

  • One thin garment, folded tight

Socks, underwear, a rolled vest. A standard cotton t-shirt fits only if you fold it small and the bag is not also carrying an insert.

Anything with real loft — knitwear, a hoodie, a pair of jeans — belongs a size or two up, because forcing it puts the strain on the seal rather than the film.

How 6x9 compares with the size above it

Most buyers are choosing between these two, and the honest difference is thickness tolerance rather than footprint.

Practical differences between 6x9 and 9x12 in day-to-day packing.

Brands that ship both small items and apparel usually run 6x9 alongside a larger size rather than trying to cover everything with one.

Designing artwork for a narrow panel

The printable area on a 6x9 is smaller than most brand teams expect once you allow for the closure strip at the top and a margin at the sides. A wordmark that reads comfortably on a 12x15 can become a grey smudge here.

The approach that works is to treat the front as a single element. One mark, sized generously, with plenty of clear space around it. Move the website address, the social handles and any care wording to the reverse, where there is no closure strip competing for room.

If your identity depends on fine detail — a thin script, a hairline rule, a monogram with tight counters — ask for that element to be checked before the run. Fine lines can close up on flexible film in a way they never do on paper.

Options confirmed on your quotation

Every line below is a choice, not a fixed figure. We quote against what you select and confirm the exact specification in writing.

OptionChoicesWhat changes
Film weight
  • Standard
  • Heavier duty
Heavier film resists puncture from a hard-cornered item such as a boxed watch.
Closure
  • Self-adhesive peel strip
  • Peel strip plus tear-open tab
A tear tab helps recipients open the bag without scissors, which matters for gift ranges.
Colour
  • Stock colour
  • Matched to your brand colour
Colour matching is quoted against a reference you supply.
Print
  • Unprinted
  • One side
  • Both sides
On this size, a single well-placed front mark usually reads better than two crowded panels.
Finish
  • Gloss
  • Matte
Matte hides handling marks; gloss holds saturated colour more strongly.

Options shown are the choices we can quote against. The exact specification for your order — including film weight, closure and print method — is confirmed in writing on your quotation.

Ordering, packing and storage

A carton of 6x9 mailers takes up very little bench space, which is why fulfilment teams tend to keep more of this size on hand than any other. Store the cartons flat and away from direct sunlight; adhesive strips are the part of a mailer that ages first, and heat is what ages them. If you are standardising a pick-and-pack station around two or three sizes, this is usually the one that sits closest to the packer. Choosing that mix well is covered in the framework for choosing a mailer size, which works through the measurements to take before you commit to a run.

For repeat orders we keep your approved artwork and specification on file, so a reorder is a confirmation rather than a fresh setup.

Quality checks before your order ships

Every custom run is checked against the proof you approved. We look at registration and colour consistency across the run, at seal integrity along the side and bottom welds, and at the adhesive strip lifting cleanly from its liner.

Bags are counted by weight and by carton, and any short or damaged carton is flagged before dispatch rather than after. If something is wrong on arrival, tell us within a reasonable window and we will work it out with you — the terms are set out in the custom-order policy.

Questions about 6x9 poly mailers

Will a folded t-shirt fit a 6x9 mailer?

A lightweight cotton tee folded small will usually go in, but it fills the bag. If you also include a card, a sticker or tissue, it stops closing comfortably. Brands shipping tees as a core line normally run 9x12 or 10x13 instead and keep 6x9 for accessories.

Are 6x9 measurements the usable interior or the outer bag?

Mailer sizes are conventionally quoted as the usable area, with the closure strip sitting above it. Because conventions vary between suppliers, we confirm on your quotation which measurement applies to the film we are quoting, and a sample is the reliable way to check against your own product.

Can a logo be printed across the full front of this size?

Yes. Full-coverage print is available, though on a panel this narrow it is worth reviewing the artwork with us first. Very fine lines and small type behave differently on flexible film than on a printed carton.

Is a bubble-lined version of this size available?

A cushioned equivalent can be quoted where the contents need protecting rather than just containing. It changes the outer dimensions for the same interior space, so it is worth requesting both on the same quotation to compare.
