If parcels sit on doorsteps in weather, the film outer is the practical answer. If the parcel is a book or a print and the feel matters more than the rain, paper has the edge.
How the lining actually works
The bubble layer protects by deforming. When a parcel is dropped, the air in the bubbles compresses and spreads the force over a longer moment and a wider area, so what reaches the contents is a push rather than a blow.
That mechanism has two implications. First, bubble size matters: larger bubbles absorb bigger single impacts, smaller bubbles spread smaller ones more evenly and add less bulk. Second, the lining only works where it is between the contents and the outside — which is why fit decides how much protection you actually get.
A small item in a large bubble mailer has cushioning around it and empty space beside it. It slides, gathers speed and hits the end. Sizing the mailer to the contents does more for arrival condition than moving up a bubble grade.

Packing a bubble mailer properly
Size to the contents, not to the category
The item should sit against the lining on all sides with no room to travel.
Box anything genuinely breakable first
The lining protects a box well. It does not protect an unboxed ceramic from a corner impact.
Fill remaining space
If the item does not fill the bag, add light fill rather than sizing up. Movement is the failure.
Seal onto a flat run of film
The adhesive needs clean film to bond to, which means the contents must stay below the strip.
Apply the label to the flattest face
Bubble texture lifts label edges. Pick the flattest area and press the whole label down.
Printing on a cushioned surface
The dimpled surface changes what artwork can do. Fine lines cross ridges and valleys, small type loses its edge, and a large flat colour reveals every dimple as a highlight. Questions about poly bubble mailers
Are poly bubble mailers waterproof?
The outer film resists rain and splashing, which is enough for a parcel left on a doorstep in weather. It is not a sealed barrier, and water can enter through the closure, so it should not be relied on for immersion or prolonged exposure.
What is the difference between poly bubble and kraft bubble mailers?
The lining is the same; the outer differs. The poly outer keeps moisture out and weighs less. The kraft outer takes fine print more crisply and feels more traditional, but it absorbs water.
Do I still need to box fragile items inside a bubble mailer?
For anything genuinely breakable, yes. The lining absorbs impact across a face but does not protect an unprotected edge or corner. A boxed item inside a cushioned mailer is a far more reliable combination.
Does a bigger bubble mean better protection?
For a single large impact, generally yes, and it adds bulk to the parcel. For most small-item shipping the bigger improvement comes from sizing the mailer so the contents cannot move at all.
Can bubble mailers be recycled?
They combine a film outer with a bubble lining, and separating the layers is not practical for a household. Where flexible-film collection points exist they may be accepted; availability varies by area, so check locally before printing any disposal instruction.
